Le P'tit train du Nord

The « P’tit train du Nord » is the longest linear park in Canada. The Laurentiens is also part of the largest cycling route in North America known as “La Route Verte 2” once being the old railroad running through Montréal to Mont-Laurier.

As of the result of certain pressures from “Curé Labelle”, the railroad running through “Les Pays d’en Haut” was inaugurated in October 1876. The expansion of the railroad over the years all the way to Mont-Laurier, helped build many towns and tourist attractions along the way.

The Laurentien Highway 15 built between 1958 and 1970, ended the railroad as being the only fast means of transportation between Montréal and the Laurentien region once provided exclusively by train. With no more government funding, the Canadian Pacific Railroad terminated passenger transportation service in 1981 and freight transport in 1989.

In 1994, the Québec government bought the railroad and rented it out to different municipalities who then established the linear park “Le P’tit Train du Nord”. Inaugurated in 1996, the bicycle pathway runs from Laval to Saint-Jérôme and all through the Laurentiens up to Mont-Laurier covering a distance of 230 km.

Pioneers in provision of service to cyclists since 1997, complete shuttle service with specially designed trailers for bicycles is available along the “Le P’tit Train du Nord” park located at the station square named “Place de la Gare” in St-Jérôme, at km 0.
